It is the mission of The Neurology Center Research Division to offer our community a setting for scientifically valid clinical research in an environment that promotes the highest standards of medical inquiry. We are committed to an ethical environment that fosters clear communication and reflects a respect for patients, clients and staff.

The Neurology Center has the ability to establish collaborative agreements with major neurology groups in the San Diego area, as well as other groups based at the major university and private medical centers in Southern California (for larger, multi-center trials).
We have participated in trials for stroke, migraine, epilepsy, pain management, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, peripheral neuropathy, chronic fatigue, and DVT prevention (1).
The Neurology Center has four full-time Clinical Research Coordinators.

Migraine Studies:
Prevention:
Do you suffer from Migraines?
You may be eligible to participate in an investigational research study of BOTOX for preventive treatment of Chronic Migraine Headaches
- Must be 18 to 65 years old
- Must be diagnosed with migraine headaches
- Must have headaches more days than not
- Must not be taking headache preventives, such as propanalol
- Have a stable medical condition
Qualified participants receive:
Study related Medications, Tests, and Examinations Financial Compensation Available
Occipital Nerve Stimulator:
Patients with frequent migraines may be eligible to participate in preventative studies. We are recruiting patients with at least 4 migraines monthly for trials of various medications as a migraine preventatives.
Abortive therapy:
Patients with migraine headaches of moderate or severe intensity may be eligible for trials with new migraine abortive medications. Participants will receive neurologic evaluation, medication and follow-up assessments. Details are available by phone or e-mail.
Parkinson's:
We are recruiting for a trial of a medication for treatment of early Parkinsons disease. Patients must have mild symptoms, and must not be taking medications for Parkinson's symptoms at the start of the study.
Stroke Trials:
Acute Stroke treatment
We have been involved with multiple acute treatments for stroke. Our participation in the NINDS tPA for stroke trial taught us the value of community based neurologists involvement in acute stroke evaluation and treatment. We learned that the community can be taught to consider stroke as an acute emergency and respond accordingly With a team effort by the paramedics, emergency department staff and nurses, radiology, and laboratory, patients can be rapidly assessed and treated, even with a demanding protocol such as was entailed with tPA. Further definition of its complete role is still being determined. Clearly, it is but the first useful intervention for stroke.
Currently we are participating in several acute stroke treatment protocols, some being employed in patients who may also be treated with tPA. Different strategies are being investigated to minimize the damage after stroke.
All acute stroke trials require rapid assessment in your local hospital within the 1st few hours after stroke.
